A DISPLAY OF STRENGTH

A display of strength is a paper headpiece which brings to mind deer antlers or a reminisces a child's tales of dragons and stories drawn in erratic fashion on paper. This work aims to reconcile the fantastical and fearless nature of childhood with the realities of memory and the paper scars left over.

It is said that offense is the best defense, and antlers are both protective and aggressive. Strong, hard bone extends from the skull, both to protect the lifeline of the neck, to impress, and to threaten. It is also said that the pen is mightier than the sword, and few words on paper are often all that is needed to eliminate any need for defense.

"I thought first about the intention of the wearable sculpture I wanted to convey: strength, with an incorporation of fantasy and simplicity. I decided upon this very easily. To convey the strength of the wearer yet still be simple, I needed a material that could create both straight and curved lines, in the singular color of untouched and aged printer paper. Harder and sharper shapes like cones and triangles came to mind first. Having decided on my base idea and intention, I began to sketch."

This work is the first of an ongoing exploration and concentration of paper and its forms.

On a frontward angled view, the downward pointed rolls accentuate sound toward the ears.

On a back angled view, the paper amasses into a visual defense, covering the whole skull but the face.

On a side view, the form seems to be both protecting and reaching outwards, trailing behind in a featherlike manner.
