WHAT FOLLOWS

'What Follows' was an explorative visual work toward movement and visual sound. What follows a person as they go through life? When you are walking through the street, what is below you? What, in the process of living, have you left behind? Feelings? Places? Objects? What about those things that are beneath you? Are you escaping from something? Is it really beneath you, or are you running away from it as it chases you? What things have you left in the past, and what lies ahead?

What follows is a series of photographs, taken of a dance choreography. A 20 foot black screen was put up, and a volunteer given instructions to dance and move to set choreography within a given timeframe. This was then video'd and photographed at different shutter speeds, in order to achieve the effect of stillness with motion, in an indeterminable space. The weight of the strands increased twofold every half a meter, to achieve a smooth flow of movement toward the arms, and a flittering at the end. This mimicked the waves of sound in their length and speed for lower and higher pitch. In addition, the trailed lighter ends have the highest energy and momentum, painted white to gather the most light, before the lightwaves cooled and slowed to a blue, then an invisible body of black, before disappearing into the abyss.
